Finally they have arrived! Western Australian salmon are this Autumn gracing the shores of the south west corner of Western Australia to the delight of recreational and commercial fishers. It’s certainly been some lean years for these cooler water salmon over the last 3 years. It appears environmental reasons cut their annual spawning migration shorter than usual. To blame was some of the highest ocean temperatures on record off the west coast of Western Australia, compounded with very strong Leeuwin Current events. It seems this abnormal cycle has receded and some familiar conditions have once again returned. This year, big salmon schools have even travelled as far north as Perth.
Glenn Moore’s blog from the WA Museum has some more info about Western Australian salmon.
